Die Investition in Telford vereint eine fortschrittliche Testinfrastruktur, spezialisiertes technisches Fachwissen und hochwertige Kompetenzen und stärkt so die britische sicherheits- und verteidigungsindustrielle Basis sowie den Aufbau von Kapazitäten, die aktuelle und zukünftige Verteidigungsprogramme unterstützen können.

Die Schwingungsprüfanlage kann die anspruchsvollen Vibrationen und Bewegungen nachbilden, denen Militärfahrzeuge und -ausrüstung im Einsatz ausgesetzt sind. Ingenieure können anhand von Daten aus der Praxis diese Bedingungen in einer kontrollierten Umgebung reproduzieren, wodurch sie die Zuverlässigkeit bewerten, potenzielle Probleme identifizieren und nachvollziehen können, wie sich Plattformen und ihre Systeme über längere Einsatzzeiten hinweg voraussichtlich verhalten werden.

Für den „Challenger 3“ bietet dies eine zusätzliche Möglichkeit nachzuvollziehen, wie das Fahrzeug und seine Systeme auf anspruchsvolle Einsatzbedingungen reagieren. Die Anlage ergänzt physikalische Versuche, Modellierungen und andere technische Analysen und trägt dazu bei, die erforderlichen Nachweise für die Zuverlässigkeit und Leistungsfähigkeit der Plattform zu erbringen.

Entscheidend ist, dass die VTF als langfristige technische Kapazität des Vereinigten Königreichs und nicht nur für ein einzelnes Programm konzipiert wurde. Dank ihrer Größe und Flexibilität ist es möglich, künftige Verteidigungsplattformen und -technologien sowie Anwendungen in Branchen wie Luft- und Raumfahrt, Automobilindustrie, Schienenverkehr, Energiewirtschaft und Bauwesen zu unterstützen.

Die Anlage kann Strukturen und Baugruppen mit einem Gewicht von bis zu 40 Tonnen aufnehmen und komplexe Bewegungskombinationen nachbilden. Hierzu zählen vertikale Bewegungen, Nick- und Rollbewegungen. Dies ermöglicht es Ingenieuren, anspruchsvolle Betriebsbedingungen nachzubilden und beschleunigte Dauer- und Zuverlässigkeitsprüfungen durchzuführen, ohne sich ausschließlich auf ausgedehnte physikalische Versuche verlassen zu müssen.

Die Anlage wird von spezialisierten Ingenieuren und Technikern unterstützt, die in den Bereichen Maschinenbau und Elektrotechnik, Prüfung, Messtechnik, Software und Datenanalyse tätig sind. Sie wird zudem Möglichkeiten bieten, hochwertige, übertragbare Kompetenzen bei Auszubildenden und der nächsten Generation britischer Ingenieure und Techniker zu entwickeln.

Die Erweiterung der Betriebsfläche in der Region Montérégie in Québec erfolgt zu einem strategischen Zeitpunkt: Rheinmetall passt sich an die wachsende Nachfrage nach seinen Lösungen für Landautonomie an. So hat das Unternehmen allein 2025 drei Kompetenzzentren für fortschrittliche Landautonomie eingerichtet. So werden die in Kanada entwickelten Lösungen vollständig lokalisiert. Zudem wird die Bereitstellung dieser strategischen Fähigkeiten beschleunigt.

Im Mittelpunkt der Expansion stehen die PATH-Autonomietechnologie von Rheinmetall und die „Mission Master“-Suite autonomer UGS. Diese Lösungen wurden in Kanada unter Einbeziehung des Feedbacks transatlantischer Partner von Rheinmetall entwickelt. Sie stehen damit für eine skalierbare Produktion vor Ort sowie für einen langfristigen Support bereit.

This increased footprint in the Montérégie, Quebec, region comes at an important time as Rheinmetall adapts to the growing demand of its land autonomy solutions. In the last year alone, Rheinmetall has established three Advanced land autonomy centres of excellence to fully localize Canadian-developed solutions and expedite the delivery of these strategic capabilities.

Canadian autonomy on the international stage

At the core of this expansion are Rheinmetall’s PATH autonomy technology and the Mission Master suite of autonomous UGSs. Developed in Canada with feedback from Rheinmetall’s closest allies across the transatlantic, these solutions are now positioned for domestic scalable production and long-term support.

An ecosystem of Canadian collaborators

Rheinmetall has been deeply rooted in the Canadian defence ecosystem, which has enabled a rapid, responsive, and creative approach to research and development. Over the years, Rheinmetall has collaborated with a growing list of Canadian partners across industry, academia, and research centres, including Zeal Motor, Université de Sherbrooke, Quaze Technologies, and the Centre d’Innovation du Haut-Richelieu. This ecosystem of land autonomy collaborators continues to grow and demonstrates that the sovereign industrial capability is here and ready to respond.

Rheinmetall’s domestic supply chain spans nearly 1000 Canadian small- to medium-businesses, more than 600 of which are based in Quebec alone.  These partnerships remain central to Rheinmetall’s international success as it expands production and responds to future domestic and allied requirements.

Since 2024, Rheinmetall Canada has invested more than Can$150 million domestically in advanced technologies and capability development. Over its 40-year presence in Canada, the company has delivered more than 20 programs to the Canadian Armed Forces while generating over Can$1.5 billion in economic benefits. 

The future for Rheinmetall looks bright as it recommits to additional opportunities in engineering, advanced manufacturing, systems integration, software development, logistics, and in-service support. It will also continue to drive innovation alongside its Canadian suppliers, research and technology companies and to create export opportunities through its global network.

Canada has a sovereign autonomy capability that is ready for production.”  

Boris Pistorius, Federal Minister of Defence: “The new generation of Class 424 fleet intelligence vessels is equipped with high-performance sensor technology that enables very efficient monitoring of the electromagnetic spectrum across land, air and sea, and allows for even better intelligence gathering. The new vessels are due to enter service gradually from 2029 onwards, ensuring this capability for the coming decades. Our Navy and the Cyber and Information Domain Service are working closely together on this. The specialists in the Cyber and Information Domain Service utilise the technical capabilities on board to gather and analyse information. In doing so, they will make an important contribution to our situational picture. Our new capability profile stipulates a total requirement of four fleet intelligence vessels. Three are currently under construction. I have therefore, in close consultation with the Chief of the Navy and the Chief of the Cyber and Information Domain Service, set the course for a fourth sistership. We are now proceeding to the parliamentary vote on this matter.”

We are delighted that the keel has been laid for the third fleet intelligence vessel.”

The keel-laying ceremony is traditionally regarded as the symbolic start of the actual shipbuilding process. The highlights of the ceremony—including the placement of lucky coins on a keel-laying plate and the wedging of the plate under the keel-laying section—were attended by Minister of State Philipp Amthor, Vice Admiral Axel Deertz, Vice Chief of the German Navy, Vice Admiral Thomas Daum, Chief of the German Cyber and Information Domain Service (CIR), Angela Bier, Mayor of the future sponsor city of Hof, and Jürgen Giefer, Deputy Head of the Naval Directorate at the Federal Office of Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support for the German Armed Forces (BAAINBw).

The fleet intelligence vessels, which are approximately 130 metres long, are equipped with state-of-the-art sensor technology and will serve the German Armed Forces as reconnaissance platforms for maritime intelligence gathering. For final outfitting, commissioning, and testing, the vessels will later be towed to Rheinmetall’s Blohm+Voss shipyard in Hamburg.

Zeitgleich sprach sich der Bundesminister für die Beschaffung eines vierten Flottendienstbootes aus.

Boris Pistorius, Bundesminister der Verteidigung: „Die neue Generation Flottendienstboote der Klasse 424 verfügt über eine leistungsstarke Sensortechnik, die eine hocheffiziente Überwachung des elektromagnetischen Spektrums über Land, Luft und See und eine noch bessere Informationsgewinnung ermöglicht. Die neuen Boote sollen ab 2029 schrittweise zulaufen und diese Fähigkeit für die kommenden Jahrzehnte sichern. Dabei arbeiten unsere Marine und der Bereich Cyber- und Informationsraum eng zusammen. Die Spezialistinnen und Spezialisten des Cyber- und Informationsraums nutzen die technischen Fähigkeiten an Bord, um Informationen zu gewinnen und auszuwerten. Sie werden damit einen wichtigen Beitrag zu unserem Lagebild leisten. Unser neues Fähigkeitsprofil sieht einen Bedarf von insgesamt vier Flottendienstbooten vor. Bislang sind drei im Bau. Ich habe daher, eng abgestimmt mit dem Inspekteur Marine und dem Inspekteur CIR, den Kurs für ein weiteres viertes Schwesterboot gesetzt. Dazu treten wir nun in die parlamentarischen Abstimmungen.”

Die Kiellegung gilt traditionell als symbolischer Start in den eigentlichen Schiffbau. Die Höhepunkte der Zeremonie mit dem Einbringen der Glücksmünzen auf der Kiellegungsplatte und das Unterkeilen der Platte unter die Kiellegungssektion verfolgten Staatsminister Philipp Amthor, Vizeadmiral Axel Deertz, stellvertretender Inspekteur der Marine, Vizeadmiral Thomas Daum, Inspekteur des Cyber- und Informationsraums (CIR), Angela Bier, Bürgermeisterin der zukünftigen Patenstadt Hof, und Jürgen Giefer, stellvertretender Abteilungsleiter See des Koblenzer Beschaffungsamtes (BAAINBw).

Die rund 130 Meter langen Flottendienstboote sind mit modernster Sensorik ausgerüstet und werden der Bundeswehr als Aufklärungsplattformen zur seegestützten Informationsgewinnung dienen. Zur Endausrüstung, Inbetriebnahme und Erprobung werden die Einheiten später vorausgerüstet zum Hamburger Rheinmetall-Standort Blohm+Voss verholt. 

Rheinmetall ist von einem internationalen Kunden mit der Lieferung von Artilleriemunition beauftragt worden. Der Kunde hat eine fünfstellige Anzahl an 155mm-Artilleriegeschossen bestellt. Der Auftragswert, der im dritten Quartal 2026 eingebucht wurde, liegt im niedrigen dreistelligen MioEUR-Bereich.

Die Produktion hat bereits begonnen, der Auftrag soll im Jahr 2027 abgeschlossen sein.

Die Rheinmetall-Geschosse sind bereits bei verschiedenen NATO-Staaten in Nutzung. Sie können von einer Vielzahl von 155mm-Waffensystemen verschossen werden und bieten eine hohe Reichweite und Wirkung. Die Beauftragung unterstreicht die hohe Expertise Rheinmetalls im Bereich der Artilleriesysteme.

Rheinmetall has been commissioned by an international customer to supply artillery ammunition. The customer has ordered a low five-figure quantity of 155mm artillery projectiles. The contract value, which was recognised in the third quarter of 2026, is in the low three-digit million-euro range. Production has already begun, and the order is due to be completed in 2027.

The projectiles supplied by Rheinmetall are already in service with various NATO countries. They can be fired from a wide range of 155mm weapon systems and offer a long range and high effectiveness. This contract underscores Rheinmetall’s high level of expertise in the field of artillery systems.

Rheinmetall continues to invest heavily in expanding the capacity of existing facilities and establishing new production sites in order to meet the growing demand for modern 155-mm projectiles and propellant charges. Rheinmetall is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of large-calibre ammunition. The Düsseldorf-based technology group has been expanding its production capacity since 2022 and aims to produce around 1.5 million 155 mm artillery shells per year by 2030.
